Concept Design / Illustration / 3D Modelling
A project that I completed for my Level 4 Character Concept Design module at the University of Staffordshire. I was given a brief that I had to adhere to, while having to stick to a realistic or stylised realism style.Engel Oswald, a young man eager to prove his worth to his father, the Postmaster. He is expected to dedicate himself to the family business and uphold its motto: "Fast as the Future, Precise as the Past". However, this is easier said than done. His obsession with invention often leads to disaster. His ultimate goal? To bring the postal service into the new age - whether the world is ready for it, or not.

A lot of my referencing came from different museum websites, and Wikimedia Commons. Pretty much nothing came from Pinterest - since my research workflow became a lot of streamlined and specific.
My FYP from when I studied Game Art & Animation at South & City College Birmingham.
Desiree Valentine is a character who feels as if she doesn't belong where she is, and yearns to be a part of human society. She is inspired by NewJeans' 'Cool With You' music video.
Although not my first time doing ideation, this was my first time doing ideation this detailed. The process of playing with different silhouettes and then further experimenting with them was extremely fun. The best thing about this project is that I've also accidentally created many different potential designs for other characters in this universe, since they're so vastly different.
Love Stings is Desiree's 'weapon', given to her by her Cupid Bee colony. It is not actually capable of hurting people, but it is used to spread love.

Using PureRef, I collated a LOT of reference images - mostly from Pinterest.
Inspired by Riot Games, I decided to take a try at making some 'splash art' for this new character that I created. The process included making thumbnail sketches. I also tried a new technique, where I used gradient maps to define my underpainting.

A project that I completed for my Level 4 Environment Concept Design module at the University of Staffordshire. I was given the brief to design an environment for a detective adventure game set in 1940s Los Angeles - the loading dock for a factory where a crime boss operates from.
I was given a greybox model in Blender, in which I had to strictly adhere my environment to.

A project that I worked on for my final year project in my first year of studying Game Art & Animation at South & City College Birmingham, tutored by Carl Davis.
The proposal that I had set myself was to create designs based off of a game where players create their own character, but the overall theme was divided between cyberpunk and ancient Chinese culture, with motifs like yin and yang, with the main character being a sorcerer that uses 'technomancy'. There would also be a difference in appearance based off of the level that the player was at, and as the player progressed, they would be able to customise more and more of their character.
A collection of studies to further expand my artistic abilities. A lot of these will be studies of either films or music videos.
A paid freelance project that I did, using Blender and Substance 3D Painter.
A house that I modelled during my 3D Asset Development module during level 4 of studying at the University of Staffordshire. We were given a reference that we had to follow.

Valakai "sleepyfangz" Brown was born and raised in Wolverhampton, UK, with a deep-rooted passion for drawing and character creation. From a young age, he was captivated by the ability to bring imaginative worlds and unique characters to life through his art. Growing up in a loving household and acquiring his own PC and drawing tablet at the age of 10, Kai found endless inspiration in the world around him, fuelling his desire to pursue a career in art.
For 2 years he studied Game Art and Animation at South & City College Birmingham, where he learned art fundamentals and a range of skills, including 3D modelling and texturing. This is also where he found the realisation of wanting to pursue a career in concept art. Currently, he is studying Concept Art for Games and Film at the University of Staffordshire, further advancing his expertise and hoping to find industry connections.
